Delhi's Air Quality Hits 150; Most Polluted Cities Revealed

Delhi’s situation has not improved even today, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) has surpassed 150, indicating unhealthy air quality levels. This alarming figure highlights the persistent problem of air pollution in the capital city, which has been a pressing issue for years. The AQI is a crucial indicator that measures the concentration of various pollutants in the air, including particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. An AQI over 150 is categorized as “unhealthy,” which can have severe health implications for individuals, especially those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, children, and the elderly.

The issue of air pollution is not limited to Delhi alone; it extends to several other cities across India, many of which are grappling with similar challenges. Recent reports have identified cities like Kanpur, Faridabad, and Varanasi as some of the most polluted in the country. These urban areas often experience high levels of smog, particularly during the winter months, when weather conditions exacerbate the situation. Factors contributing to this pollution include vehicular emissions, industrial discharges, construction activities, and the burning of crop residues in neighboring states.

As the country grapples with the health and environmental consequences of air pollution, it is imperative for authorities to take immediate and effective action. Implementing stricter regulations on emissions, promoting the use of public transport, and increasing green cover are some of the measures that can help mitigate this crisis. Public awareness campaigns are also essential to educate citizens about the importance of reducing pollution and adopting sustainable practices. The time for decisive action is now, as the health of millions of people and the environment depend on it.
