After his passing, Sultan Khalid bin Barghash, who was not favored by the British, took control of the sultanate. The British, wanting to maintain their influence in the region, demanded that Khalid step down and allow a more pro-British leader to take his place.
When Khalid refused to comply with the ultimatum issued by the British, hostilities quickly escalated. The British forces, equipped with advanced weaponry, including naval bombardments from their warships, launched an attack on Zanzibar. The sultan’s forces, which consisted mainly of outdated artillery and a small number of soldiers, were no match for the superior military power of the British. The bombardment began at 9:02 AM, and within minutes, the sultan’s defenses were obliterated. By 9:45 AM, the war was effectively over, as the sultan’s palace was in ruins, and many of his men were either killed or fled.
