CAQM Reinstates GRAP-IV in Delhi-NCR as Air Quality Deteriorates

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has reintroduced the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-IV) in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) as air quality levels have plummeted to ‘severe’ status. This decision comes in response to alarming pollution levels that pose significant health risks to the population. GRAP-IV is a structured framework designed to tackle air pollution through a series of graded measures that escalate based on the severity of the air quality index (AQI).

Under GRAP-IV, various restrictions and guidelines have been implemented to mitigate air pollution. The measures include a ban on construction and demolition activities, except for essential projects, and the suspension of certain industrial operations that contribute to air quality degradation. Additionally, the use of diesel generators is restricted, particularly in non-essential sectors, to reduce emissions. The measures aim to curb pollution from multiple sources, ensuring that the air quality improves and public health is safeguarded.

In contrast, certain activities are permitted under strict regulations to balance the need for economic activities while addressing environmental concerns. For instance, essential construction projects, public transport services, and emergency services are allowed to continue under monitored conditions. The CAQM emphasizes the importance of public cooperation and awareness in adhering to these guidelines to achieve better air quality outcomes. As the situation evolves, the commission will continue to assess air quality and adjust measures as necessary, highlighting the importance of both governmental and community efforts in combatting air pollution in the region.
